Artemide Multi-Mother (2) , 1967

painted terracotta
h cm 37

The work presented here is part of a very small group of sculptures (six, one of which was destroyed) conceived in 1967 for the film "...and of Shaul and the Assassins on the Road to Damascus," later made in 1973 by his friend Gianni Toti, founder of the well-known art and culture magazine Carte Segrete.
The film's highly experimental language, almost a speculative treatise on Polo of Tarsus, involved the insertion of images temporally extraneous to the context of the story (the 4th century AD), interpolating objects and costumes from the 1960s and 1970s with the archaic setting.
The film was reworked several times during the 6 years of preparation, and many scenes, for reasons of length, were ultimately cut, making it impossible to trace Guidi's work(s) in the final footage.
This group of works refers to a complex cosmos of symbols and historical stratifications, well known to the artist, which cover a thousand-year chronological span: from the archaic and at times Neolithic inspiration of the Multimammia to the classical, metaphysical forms of the Venus of Ephesus.
